About the Project

The San Anselmo Bridge Projects are community-driven planning projects that consider the needs and design of updating the Madrone Avenue, Nokomis Avenue, and Center Boulevard bridges. To help meet key project objectives, while minimizing environmental and community impacts, several bridge design alternatives are currently under consideration.

BRIDGE DESIGN ALTERNATIVES

The bridge designs will need to be consistent with the existing roadway classifications and the Town’s complete streets policy. All design alternatives will focus on replacement of the existing bridges with similar two lane bridges that will be wider to accommodate vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians with standard traffic lanes, shoulders, and ADA compliant sidewalks.

PUBLIC INPUT

The Town of San Anselmo is committed to an open public outreach process to update community members about the project and gather input on the needs of the community as it relates to the updating of the Nokomis Avenue, Madrone Avenue, and Center Boulevard Bridges. To learn about upcoming public meetings, please see how to get involved.

MINIMIZING IMPACTS

Throughout all phases of the project, measures will be implemented to minimize impacts to local residents, local commercial businesses, and address environmental and aesthetic impacts to San Anselmo Creek.

The bridges will also be designed to pass a 100-year storm event within the channel. In addition to the bridges being replaced, there will be temporary in-channel work required to remove the existing bridge piers and abutments, excavate for the proposed bridges foundations, and relocate some utilities.

Construction activities within San Anselmo Creek must comply with a variety of measures and regulatory agency requirements designed to protect the creek corridor’s habitat and aesthetic features. The projects must address impacts to fish and wildlife within the creek. Impacts to trees and vegetation will be minimized consistent with Town policy. As federally funded projects, the projects must be in compliance with both federal and state environmental requirements (NEPA and CEQA).

COSTS AND FUNDING

The project will be funded by the federal Highway Bridge Program (88.53%) with matching local funds (11.47%). The local match will be provided by Marin County Flood Zone 9 and, in essence, this project will cost the Town very little to implement.

PROJECT SCHEDULE

Preliminary data collection and analysis began in spring 2015. A public open house occurred in October 2015 and a Pop-Up event was organized in May 2017 to begin discussing the process and get feedback from the community regarding design selection. Following selection of the preferred bridge alternatives and completion of CEQA/NEPA environmental review, the final construction schedule will be established. As the projects move forward, both the schedule and key milestones will be updated on the project website.
